brewhound is a mobile app that helps people find local happy hour deals across Metro-Vancouver. A participant in Wavefront’s Venture Acceleration Program, brewhound is focused on scaling up and expanding across Canada.
An idea born in a bar
Lots of people come up with business ideas over drinks with friends. Ashiq Ahamed actually turned his idea into a thriving business. As happy hour ended, Ashiq and his friends started searching online for more food and drink deals nearby. The information they found was either lacking details or outdated.
“We thought we could build something to help people easily find happy hour deals,” Ashiq explains. “I’m not a developer so we came at it from the user’s point of view: what would we want the app to look like? Then we found a development team to take care of the technical side.”
Today, brewhound offers up food and drink deals from more than 600 bars and restaurants. In addition to happy hours, people can find specials for lunch, brunch or theme nights (Pasta Tuesday, Wing night etc.). Available on iPhone and Android, the app uses a person’s location to find deals nearby. They can search up to a week in advance.
Wavefront’s role in brewhound’s growth
Ashiq took part in Wavefront’s Venture Acceleration Program in brewhound’s early days. Combining skills training with day-to-day mentorship from Entrepreneurs in Residence (EIRs), VAP puts startups on the path to profitability.
“VAP gave us the tools to achieve product market fit. It helped us move an idea from the concept stage to commercialization,” Ashiq says. “The ongoing support from the EIRs pushing us to improve our business from different perspectives has been great in helping us figure out how to move things forward.”
brewhound poised for expansion
Still growing rapidly in Vancouver, brewhound is planning to launch a mobile optimized web version and expand across Canada. If there’s a happy hour, brewhound will find it!
