We Are Wavefront is an ongoing series where we take a look at the people who make up Wavefront. This month we sat down with Mia McCannel, our new Start-up Services Coordinator in the Vancouver office.
Tell me about yourself….
I grew up in Victoria, BC and moved to Vancouver about 5 years ago to obtain my undergraduate degree in Tourism Management. I really enjoyed the Tourism Industry and got to work for companies like Fairmont and Marriott, along with the opportunity to work in partnership with the Pacific Asia Tourism Alliance to help develop community-based tourism in Vietnam. With my passion for travel, tourism has always been one of my main interests, but I did want to grow in other ways. So, I went back to school and took a MSc. in International Business. During the program I had the opportunity to do 6 months of study in the UK, in addition to 6 months at Capilano University in BC. After finishing my dissertation at the end of September 2017 I was ready to jump start my career! I ended up finding the role at Wavefront through my brother who worked at Viatec (now with Llamazoo). After hearing his thoughts and feedback on the role and then hearing more about Wavefront it definitely appeared to be a great opportunity that I couldn’t pass up!
What do you do here at Wavefront? What have you been up to since you started?
My position is the Startup Services Coordinator. It’s a new position here at Wavefront. Vivian and I are working through what the role is… I’ll be working closely with Vivian to ensure efficient day-to-day operations of the Accelerator programs, supporting our portfolio of startups, the accelerator operations team, as well as the program Executives in Residence. Essentially, I’ll be the go-to resource for all the companies coming into our accelerator programs. The first two weeks have been a learning curve so far! I’ve been busy meeting with the different departments, companies, and learning about everything!
What keeps you busy outside of work? What’s one fun fact about you?
I’m very active. Growing up I was always into sports. I was a competitive gymnast for 13 years. I live in North Vancouver so I like to take advantage of the nearby mountains! I’m also trying to get more involved in community building and volunteering. ONE FUN FACT: I am Vegan.
Anything that excites you about the future of tech?
It’s so fast paced, it’s always changing. Which is what I was looking for in my new role. You never really know what to expect. I don’t like doing the same thing every day. Being in an industry that’s ever-changing is what excites me!
