With mobile phone adoption approaching full penetration in North America, innovators are pursuing the next big opportunity: machine-to-machine (M2M) communications.
Examples of M2M applications include smart meters that track energy use, health information that is transmitted from bedside to a nursing station, or a vending machine that sends a signal that supplies are dwindling.
So how big is this opportunity? It’s huge. There will be 50 billion connected devices by 2020, according to some estimates. Despite a weak economy, the M2M market has tripled network connections in the past two years – from 25 million to more than 75 million.
A number of Canadian companies are involved in the M2M market. I will talk about some of them in this series of blog posts. I will also explain how our wireless industry can – and must – do better.
