On March 16th Wavefront and Accelerate Okanagan – with the support of CDMN and NRC-IRAP – pulled together over 100 people from nearly 60 incubators and accelerators from across Canada and around the world for the first Canadian Accelerator Summit.
The objective was to unite the entire community of accelerators in Canada to learn what strategies work, what can be improved and how the community can better work together to support Canadian entrepreneurs. The event was met with overwhelmingly positive response – everyone came away with connections and learnings to apply back into their communities.
Attendees included representatives from PEI to BC and the Yukon. We found that while our organizations may have slightly different ways of operating, we all share similar challenges. The agenda covered diverse subjects such as serving growth companies, engaging with alumni, connecting clients with customers and changing business models for accelerators. We heard from folks creating new approaches towards entrepreneurial support in Canada, the US, the UK and even India!
One big takeaway was that as organizations working in the same business, we need to communicate more regularly to raise the bar on how companies are supported. We need to speak with one voice with a shared message when sharing our successes to government or other supporting organizations. Most of all, we need to collaborate on an ongoing basis to ensure that Canadian companies have the best support possible to flourish in Canada and around the world.
We hope to see everybody again next year for year 2 of the Canadian Accelerator Summit!
