About SMARTWEEK 2014
Our focus for SMARTWEEK 2014 is “Creating a connected world” by exploring the trends, innovation and future of Internet of Things (IoT), in Toronto and globally by bringing together the brightest minds, inventors and industry leaders who are creating the future human experience.
SMARTWEEK 2014 explores emerging smart technologies and strategies that are shaping our connected world and generating profound opportunities. The week challenges us to contemplate how to transform our lives, work, and play to smarter horizons. It will showcase the brightest minds, inventors and industry leaders who are illuminating and creating the future of IoT and M2M. The week will feature live streaming of a Toronto hosted Industry Day and a two-day Conference as well as global outreach to international partner cites which include: London, Berlin, Dubai.
TORONTO + GLOBAL COMMUNITY EVENTS
Part of SMARTWEEK 2014 is to promote local groups that are becoming knowledge hubs of connected technology. From maker-labs, Meetup groups, incubators, accelerators, student groups and co-working spaces.
TORONTO INDUSTRY DAY
This exceptional day brings together top leadership from the Fortune 100’s biggest makers of IoT and M2M technologies, systems and processes. These distinguished leaders will be sharing perspectives of how their organisations’ innovations, creativity and business models are at the forefront of unleashing the convergence of the Internet of Things, people and business.
A two-day event highlighting IoT, M2M trends and innovations from the perspectives of entrepreneurs, inventors and academics, their collective ingenuity is redefining the entire human experience.
WHY SHOWCASE SMART TECHNOLOGIES AND WHY IN TORONTO?
Smart technologies or the Internet of Things (IoT) represents a major transition in the history of the Internet, as connections move beyond computing devices, and begin to power billions of everyday devices and systems. Previously inert objects are now sensor laden intelligent devices that communicate with other gadgets.
Estimates for the IoT market value are massive, since by definition the IoT will be a diffuse layer of devices, sensors, and computing power that overlays entire consumer, business-to-business, and government industries. The IoT will account for an increasingly huge number of connections: 4 billion devices today, and 10 billion by 2018. In 2016 IoT connected devices alone will exceed the then sum total of all smartphones, tablets, and personal computers.
Toronto is Canada’s hub of innovation and an emerging contender to play the role of a globally recognised IoT/M2M epicenter. Toronto already possesses many of the fundamental constituents; a vibrant startup ecosystem, Fortune 100 technology companies, first class infrastructure, world renowned universities and research institutions. Recently, tech giant Cisco Systems selected Toronto as one of four global cities in which it will make a $100-million investment in a global innovation centre dedicated to the “Internet of Everything”. The new complex is just one of many initiatives in Toronto catalysing startup companies and the broader spectrum of innovators involved in developing new applications for smart connection technologies.
